News Corp.’s Amplify is latest with a MOOC for the high school crowd

High school kids across the country are getting the chance to make potentially thousands of new Facebook friends. That’s because massive open online courses (MOOCs), which have historically targeted college-age students and lifelong learners, are making their way to the pre-college crowd. This week, News Corp.’s education arm Amplify announced a high school MOOC for AP Computer Science. The course, which kicks off in August, is intended to give students two semesters of academic instruction in preparation for the College Board’s exam. The online program, taught by an experienced high school teacher, is free to students. And an added option, called MOOC Local, which provides schools with students in the CS MOOC additional resources, will cost $200 per student but is free to schools for the first year.

Fighting Distraction in Online Courses

Online courses are here to stay, but they present real challenges for today’s learners. In a traditional classroom, distraction is a significant problem, but it’s difficult to sit through an entire lecture without absorbing at least part of the lesson. Online, it’s easy for a student to sit down with the intention of completing a course module or assignment and realize two hours (and ten YouTube videos) later that they didn’t get anything done. Students raised in the fast-paced, multi-tasking, distraction-prone digital age have more access to learning than ever before — but when education is conducted online, next to entertainment and 24-hour updates, students often have a hard time focusing long enough to really learn.

Benefits of Online, Face-to-Face Teacher Professional Development Similar, Study Finds

These are really exciting results. Done well, on-line professional development is as effective as face-to-face professional development as published in ACM Transactions on Computing Education. These results are promising for our CSLearning4U project. In particular, the benefit that Barry Fishman saw is what we were most hoping for, based on our studies with Klara Benda — it’s all about fitting into the teachers’ lives. Of course, the devil is in how the teacher training is designed and executed. ”There are no shortcuts in professional development,” Fishman stressed. In the study, teachers who received the online professional development weren’t just plopped in front of YouTube. Instead, the group took a series of self-paced “short courses” via computer. They also interacted online with facilitators who helped them through the units and answered their questions.

Department of Education aims to prevent summer brain drain

In a recent survey conducted by the National Summer Learning Association, more than 65 percent of teachers polled reported that it takes them up to four weeks to re-teach the previous year’s skills at the beginning of a new school year. In addition, the survey — which questioned 500 teachers across the country — revealed that for about 25 percent of them, it takes more than five weeks to get students caught up after a summer off. The West Virginia Department of Education recently launched an online initiative to help prevent students from suffering from that summer learning loss.

What MOOCs and webinars can teach us about digital engagement

The biggest eye-opener for me is that although online communication is often one to one (one organisation talking to one individual in the audience), in many of my webinars the ‘one’ on the receiving end actually was a group of participants sharing the same laptop. I’ve heard of MOOC study groups where people watch the videos together. People online are not necessarily (physically) alone. When thinking about digital engagement this means the people at the receiving end will talk, discuss and exchange ideas outside of the scope of the digital environment and maybe only report some key words back. This provides huge opportunities for facilitators in webinars and other online processes.

Using a Smartphone’s Eyes and Ears to Log Your Every Move

New tricks will enable a life-logging app called Saga to figure out not only where you are, but what you’re doing. Having mobile devices closely monitoring our behavior could make them more useful, and open up new business opportunities. Many of us already record the places we go and things we do by using our smartphone to diligently snap photos and videos, and to update social media accounts. A company called ARO is building technology that automatically collects a more comprehensive, automatic record of your life. ARO is behind an app called Saga that automatically records every place that a person goes. Now ARO’s engineers are testing ways to use the barometer, cameras, and microphones in a device, along with a phone’s location sensors, to figure out where someone is and what they are up to. That approach should debut in the Saga app in late summer or early fall.

Online education expanding in Florida

A new law aims to offer more online classes to Florida students than ever before, but making sure it works as intended will take lots of time and planning, school officials say. Gov. Rick Scott signed the bill into law July 1, allowing more out-of-state digital learning companies to partner with developing Florida online classes and requiring the Department of Education to research the effects. Now, the state has to figure out how to hold online teachers and curricula accountable. The goal is to improve education for all Florida students, said Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, one of the bill’s sponsors.

Virtual learning program geared for younger students

The students in Lexington’s virtual summer school aren’t high schoolers getting credits for fall or adults earning college credits to advance careers. They are kindergarten students to second- graders. “I like rhyming,” said Belle Payne, 6, one of 30 students using an online program to help her with language skills. She prefers rhyming words to word endings, but worked carefully on her new lesson Thursday. Her mom would take her swimming as soon as she was done. “Mornings are best,” said Cathy Payne, saying her daughter asks for lessons after breakfast and happily works toward her 60-minute weekly goal.

How A New Free Online Computer Science Course Could Bring College Prep To Everyone

Now, some diversity may be heading the Valley’s way thanks to Former New York Schools Chancellor and Amplify CEO, Joel Klein, who is giving away a free Massively Open Online Course in Advanced Placement Computer Science. “There’s very few really good computer science teachers in America”, Klein tells me, at the The Atlantic’s Aspen Ideas Festival. “There are lots of kids who are prepared and could do well in these programs.” Starting this Fall, Amplify will provide an interactive online course to students around the country. More than 3,000 schools will offer students 2 semesters worth of credit hours. While details are scant on the curriculum, it will hopefully open up a path to a more colorful technology sector. Hispanics and blacks make up 30 and 13% of the American population, respectively, but they only account for 6.7 and 5% of Computer Science degrees, according to a report by the Anita Borg Institute For Women In Technology.

ABB secures offshore automation contract in the North Sea

Switzerland-based power and automation technology group ABB has secured a contract from Statoil to upgrade safety and automation systems at the Heimdal platform in the North Sea, off the coast of Norway.
Under the contract signed with Statoil in the second quarter of 2013, ABB will provide a new human-machine interface (HMI) for the control system and control room modifications.
The company will also deliver a simulator, fire and gas detectors, as well as integrating telecommunication in the control room and information management systems (IMS).
Once the upgrade is complete, the Heimdal platform will feature ABB's modern 800xA Extended Automation platform as the main control system.
The system has been adapted to comply with Statoil's guidelines for workstations layout and design of process graphics.
As part of the agreement, ABB will hold the complete engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) responsibility for the project.
"ABB will provide a new human-machine interface (HMI) for the control system and control room modifications."
ABB Norway Process Automation division manager, Per Erik Holsten, said that the upgrade of the safety and automation system on Heimdal is expected to result in profitable and safe operation of the platform."
"ABB's maintenance and modification service solutions extend the life span of installations that have been in operations for a significant amount of time," Holsten added.
The Heimdal field has currently lowered its own production and is now a hub in the central North Sea for the processing and distribution of gas.
The platform receives gas from the Huldra, Oseberg, Skirne and Vale fields and exports it through Vesterled or Statpipe pipelines for processing.
Heimdal field, at its peak, can process gas up to 15% to 20% of the total Norwegian gas production.

Boiler for FPSO Vessel Delivered to Hamburg Shipyard

MV Frauke, a modern heavy-lift vessel in SAL's fleet since 2008, has delivered a boiler to the Blohm+Voss repair shipyard in the port of Hamburg. The boiler was destined for an FPSO Vessel which is being conversed onsite in a 17-month life extension programme. MV Frauke loaded the heavy cargo of 850t (24m by 17m by 26m) from a barge and discharged it onto the terminal. Later, the boiler was lifted aboard the FPSO by floating crane.
SAL provides reliable and cost-effective sea transportation for the offshore industry. SAL vessels offer short transit times and custom-made solutions for oil and gas projects.

Leif-Andreas Storvik joins TMC

We are pleased to announce that Leif-Andreas Storvik has joined TMC in the role of product manager feed air treatment systems. He is also responsible for the filter and dryer portfolio focusing on suppliers, in-house and external product training and product development. He will also give technical support to customers.
Leif-Andreas has over 10 years' experience in the marine production industry. His previous role was as project manager/product Manager at Hamworthy Moss AS/ Wärtsilä Moss AS with a main focus on nitrogen systems for the marine and offshore market. Prior to that he worked for Inocean AS as senior engineer focusing on the conversion of tankers to FPSOs.
Leif-Andreas is an educated marine chief engineer with additional education as a machine engineer (bachelor) specialising in product design and refrigerant technic.
We believe that Leif-Andreas' experience and expertise is a valuable addition to our team and he will be a crucial factor in building TMC's organisation for the future. We welcome him to TMC and wish him the best of luck in his new role!

Wison secures contract to build 3,000hp modular drilling rig in Gulf of Mexico

Wison Offshore & Marine, the upstream oil and gas division of the Wison Group, has secured a contract from China Oilfield Services (COSL) to construct a new 3,000hp modular drilling rig.
The rig, which will be installed on the Tsimin-C drilling and production platform in the Mexican Bay of Campeche, will be used on a platform in the Mexican sector of the Gulf of Mexico that is operated by Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX).
As part of the contract, Wison will provide project management, procurement, production engineering, fabrication, load out, offshore installation and commissioning support for the installation of the rig.
Wison will fabricate the approximately 2,500t rig at its Nantong facility in China and is expected to deliver it in the second quarter of 2014.
The drilling facility is based on a self-nstalling design that consists of 97 smaller units, which require significant integration work to strict tolerances during module construction.
"Wison will provide project management, procurement, production engineering, fabrication, load out, offshore installation and commissioning support for the installation of the rig."
Wison Offshore & Marine executive vice president, L. Dwayne Breaux, said: "Wison has established a strong track record in delivering drilling modules for COSL and we are extremely pleased to expand this relationship and provide more high-quality facilities for PEMEX."
In 2010, Wison delivered two modular platform rigs to COSL for operation on China National Offshore Oil (CNOOC) facilities offshore China.
In 2007, Wison provided four platform rigs for COSL that are currently operating in offshore Mexico.
Wison executes engineering and design activities out of its headquarters in Shanghai, China, as well as in Houston, Texas, and performs fabrication of facilities from its two Chinese yards in Nantong and Zhoushan.
The company, however, has not disclosed the financial terms of the latest contract.

Offshore drilling services market to reach $121.1bn by 2018, says report

The offshore drilling services market is expected to grow from $73.1bn in 2013 to $121.1bn by 2018, growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.6%, according to a new report published by market research and consulting firm, MarketsandMarkets.
The report said that the market will grow primarily due to new offshore discoveries and exponential rise in demand for energy worldwide.
The offshore drilling services market, which is growing after the slump following the oil spill in the US Gulf of Mexico in 2010, includes contract drilling services, as well as directional and logging while drilling services and various submarkets.
The report analysed offshore drilling services market share, value chain, Porters five force analysis, and market metrics, such as drivers, restraints, burning issues, winning imperative and opportunities.
MarketsandMarkets noted that the golden triangle, which includes Brazil, US Gulf of Mexico and West Africa, are the key markets for offshore activities.
"The market will grow primarily due to new offshore discoveries and exponential rise in demand for energy worldwide."
The report, which analyses offshore drilling activities on the basis of shallow, deep and ultra-deepwater activities, estimates that offshore oilfield operators, said that Asia-Pacific is the emerging market in terms of demand for energy and offshore drilling activities.
The report will also look to re-develop current fields and explore ultra-deep water reserve potentials.
Offshore oilfield operators will focus on developing new technologies through research and development and incorporate their existing technologies to reduce high risk and associated cost.
The research firm projects shallow water activities, and deepwater and ultra-deepwater activities to rise in the near future.
The report divided the offshore drilling services market into two areas, contract drilling service providers that consist of Transocean (Switzerland), Ensco (UK), Seadrill (Bermuda), and oilfield services companies that consist of Baker Hughes (US), Schlumberger (US), Halliburton Energy Services (US), and Weatherford (Switzerland).

Today’s Brent crude falls after worries of slow economic revival in China

Apprehensions about slow economic recovery in China have led to a marginal decline in Brent crude price, while data showing an unprecedented drop in crude oil stocks pushed up the US crude price.
Brent crude fell 2 cents to $107.79 a barrel, while US crude oil rose 82 cents to $104.35 a barrel, reported Reuters.
Customs data showed that imports of crude oil imports in China dropped 7.4%in June from the previous month, while trade data has indicated signs of an economic slowdown.
The American Petroleum Institute released data which revealed crude inventories dropped by nearly 9 million barrels in the week, against analysts' forecasts of a decline of 3.3 million barrels.
Oil prices came under pressure after the US dollar reached a three-year high against other major currencies.
On Tuesday, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) lowered its global growth prediction for the fifth time, since the beginning of 2012.
IMF has reduced its forecast mainly due to a slowdown in emerging economies and recession hit Europe, which also capped oil prices.
US oil prices received some support as the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) had slightly squeezed its outlook for oil markets in 2014 and left the balance for 2013 unaltered.

Icy truth: Greenpeace on whistleblowing and reckless attitudes in the Arctic


Greenpeace International has launched a whistleblowing website

A new whistleblowing website launched by Greenpeace International aims to expose the shocking operational blunders some of the biggest oil companies in the world are making in one of its most delicate regions. Elly Earls met Ben Ayliffe to find out more about the 'shoddy practices' and 'reckless attitudes' Arctictruth.org hopes to make public.

Following repeated operational blunders by Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell in the Arctic region, Greenpeace International has launched a whistleblowing website, to encourage employees and subcontractors of oil companies involved in Arctic drilling to come forward and expose the sometimes shocking safety practices being employed in one of the world's most dangerous regions.
Arctictruth.org, which went live on 24 April 2013, aims to challenge unsafe Arctic drilling practices before it's too late, hopefully averting another Deepwater Horizon-style oil spill in an environment that is even less prepared for it than the Gulf of Mexico.
So far, the response has been encouraging. The website has garnered extremely positive feedback from a range of politicians, employees, NGOs and members of the public, and Ben Ayliffe, head of Arctic oil at Greenpeace International, believes this is only the beginning.
"Our guess is that many people working in the oil industry will have been horrified by the kind of happy-go-lucky attitude shown by companies like Shell in operating in one of the most delicate environments on Earth, and their ethical convictions will be telling them that if they can do something to prevent a major disaster from happening, they should," he said.
Elly Earls sat down with Ayliffe to find out more.
Elly Earls: What are the potential consequences - human, environmental and economic - of oil accidents in the Arctic region?
"Arctictruth.org, which went live on 24 April 2013, aims to challenge unsafe Arctic drilling practices before it's too late."
Ben Ayliffe: The Arctic is acutely vulnerable to large oil spills. Freezing temperatures, thick sea ice, months of perpetual darkness, storm forced winds and dense walls of fog would pose unprecedented challenges to responding to an accident in the icy waters of the far north. Because of this, the impact of a spill in these northern seas would be catastrophic. The lack of sunlight inhibits the breakdown of oil through biological processes and exposure to the elements, meaning that toxic oil lingers, leaving the ecosystem contaminated for decades.
The risks of an accident are compounded by an oil industry that remains completely unable to meet the enormous challenges posed by operating in the Arctic. Despite years of effort and billions of pounds of investment, there is no proven method of cleaning up oil spilled in ice, while the disastrous attempts by Shell to drill in the Alaskan Arctic during the last year have shown that even the world's biggest energy companies do not have the capabilities to drill there safely.
EE: What prompted Greenpeace to launch Arctic Truth in April?
BA: Shell's recent experience in the Arctic waters of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas has been a shambles from start to finish and if it hadn't been for close NGO and media scrutiny, as well as investigations by the US Government, very little of its dreadful safety practices and repeated operational blunders would ever have seen the light of day.
Shell told the world it had a "world-class" Arctic system in place, but its failures in Alaska made us realise that now is the time to encourage new voices to join this debate - particularly those of employees and subcontractors who are willing to help challenge unsafe Arctic drilling before it's too late.
EE: Which incidents in the Arctic over the last few years do you consider the most worrying?
BA: The picture that will linger in most people's minds is that of the Kulluk, Shell's antiquated drilling barge, beached on the rocky coast of Kodiak Island after breaking free of its towing ships in heavy weather.
"The risks of an accident are compounded by an oil industry that remains completely unable to meet the enormous challenges."
What's most alarming about this accident is that the harsh weather conditions which apparently caused it are nothing compared to the kind ships can run into at higher latitudes. Yet it took Shell days to regain control of the rig and we still don't know the full extent of the damage it received.
Beyond this you could argue, with some justification, that Shell's entire drilling programme proves how worryingly unprepared the oil industry is for the extreme conditions it will face in the Arctic. From drill ships running aground to engine fires and from failed safety tests to criminal investigations, Shell has shown the world it is not Arctic ready. Yet at the same time it appears perfectly willing to cut corners and take huge risks in the scramble to plunder the untapped resources of this pristine region. Together these two make a particularly toxic brew that we are determined to stop before we witness a Deepwater Horizon-style oil spill in the frozen Arctic.
EE: Arctictruth.org encourages employees and subcontractors of oil companies involved in Arctic drilling to come forward and help expose the risks of drilling in the region. How much irresponsible behaviour do you believe goes on under the radar, which the public is not aware of?
BA: It's hard to say for sure, but I can't quite believe that every story about Shell's bungled Arctic drilling programme has yet come to light. Having got so much wrong at almost every level of their operations, from sub-contractor oversight to towing rigs, I think it's reasonable to assume that plenty of other skeletons remain inside Shell's Arctic cupboard.
EE: Can you give me some more details on the type of information you are hoping to acquire through Arctictruth.org?
BA: We are looking for information of important public interest relating to the safety of oil drilling in the Arctic, by any company, that might otherwise be kept secret and away from public scrutiny. Right now we have a specific interest in Shell given their recent drilling failures in the Arctic [and], in particular, any information that can shed light on what went on behind the scenes during Shell's disastrous attempt to drill in the Arctic.
We have asked that people try to provide us with verifiable information, whenever possible, such as photos, videos, letters or email correspondence. All information will be handled with the utmost discretion.
EE: Tell me about some past successes you have had with whistleblowers at Greenpeace.
BA: Greenpeace has a long history of documenting environmental abuses by corporations, and much of it wouldn't have been possible without insiders coming forward with hard evidence. They include a concerned former whaler tipping the organisation off about wrongdoings in Japan's 'scientific' whaling programme and a disillusioned former employee of a waste recycling site in England, who highlighted that much of the waste was being dumped in Africa rather than being recycled.
EE: What are the challenges of an approach like this? For example, will people want to come forward? How will you convince them to do so and how will you protect their anonymity?
"We are looking for information of important public interest relating to the safety of oil drilling in the Arctic."
BA: Greenpeace International already has a specific Twitter feed that individuals use to provide us with useful information concerning Arctic drilling. More broadly, Greenpeace regularly receives inside information from individuals who want to expose bad practice within their companies across a variety of environmental issues.
We treat this information with absolute respect and use it to challenge those practices in public, while ensuring that our sources are protected. Given both these things we are confident this site will be successful.

Today’s Brent crude remains steady; demand concern in China caps gain

Brent crude steadied today, as yesterday's gains were reined back by the prospect of additional supply from the non-Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) producers and demand growth concerns in China.
Brent crude was down 8 cents to $107.65 a barrel, while US crude dropped 7 cents to $104.84, reported Reuters.
On Thursday, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said the supply from the non-OPEC region is expected to grow at the fastest pace in decades next year.
The IEA also opined that more non-OPEC supply, including from the North American shale oil boom will be able to meet strong global demand in 2014, and take away the market share of OPEC countries.
On Wednesday, US data showed the biggest two-week decline on record in crude stockpiles, while refinery output reached a five-year high.
Prices were pulled down as weak demand for commodities in China continued, while the country's finance minister said he anticipates growth to be at 7% in 2013.
